How To Make a Watermelon Fruit Bowl

Barbecue season is here and I don’t know about you, but every time I get invited to a cookout, I always leave my dish behind! I thought this was a fun way to bring something that’s cute and functional to your next event!

It’s pretty simple to create this, but I’m going to give you a quick run through of how I did it in case you are wondering! You can definitely mix up the fruit you use (add strawberries or pineapple or anything else you like!). I cut out a few star shapes, which is totally optional but would be fun for a 4th of July party!

What you’ll need…

Here’s how you do it…

1. Start with a watermelon that’s long and narrow (oblong?) versus one that is completely round.

2. I cut my watermelon crosswise (the short way) but you can certainly cut it lengthwise for a bigger bowl.

3. Use a melon baller to scoop out the inside of the melon (or use a knife to cut slices, then around the outer edge to get larger chunks out if you don’t have a melon baller!) Transfer this to a large dish

4. You will likely be left with the above (some extra melon and juice, so you’ll want to use a knife to go around the edge to even it off, and pour the juice out. It’ll look something like this after you trim the edges: How to make a watermelon fruit bowl | 4th of July party fruit | 4th of July snack idea | How to make watermelon fruit salad GinaKirk.com @ginaekirk

5. Rinse and/or cut up the additional fruit you’re planning to use in the fruit salad, and toss it together with the melon:

6. Transfer the fruit salad to the “watermelon bowl”. You may have some extra, you can bring that in a separate container and refill the bowl as it empties, or stick it in the fridge and save it for yourself at home!

7. Optional: If you want to add shapes, take a thin slice off the other side of your watermelon, and use a cookie cutter to cut out desired shapes:

8. Place shapes on top of the fruit salad, and serve! If you’re traveling with this, wrapping it in plastic wrap works well to keep it all contained. Enjoy!

Love this, the star cut-out is a super-cute touch too. We love fruit bowls in the heat of a Texas summer but I never really thought about taking a watermelon-bowl filled with fruit to a cookout. Brilliant! Love this post, thanks for sharing! (Stopping by from the Pretty Pintastic Blog Hop)
